Sgt. Thomas passed away after spending a month in the hospital fighting for his life. Sergeant Thomas passed on from complications due to COVID-19 contracted while working as an essential worker, a peace officer, serving the Richmond community. Sgt. Thomas was a long time POA board member of the Richmond Police Officers Association and the President of the RPOA in 2015.
.
Sgt. Thomas served Richmond residents for over 24 years with the Richmond Police Department. Before coming to Richmond, Sgt. Thomas started his career as a police officer in the Albany and Novato Police Department.
In his long career with Richmond, Sgt. Thomas held assignments in the Neighborhood Services Team, Training Officer Program, and School Resource Officer. During his time as a School Resource Officer, he mentored and guided underserved Richmond youth and was like a father figure to many. He also coached youth baseball and softball.
During his time with RPD, Sgt. Thomas was a mentor and friend to all. He was dedicated to public service – as President of the Guardians of Justice (a community charitable organization to ensure the fair treatment of African American officers), he led various neighborhood events and giveaways to enrich the lives of those in the Richmond community.
Our hearts are with his wife and four children during this difficult time. Supporting his wife and family will ensure that this dutiful public servant, who risked his life for the Richmond community, will have the proper burial and services that are needed while any COVID-19 LODD financial issues are worked out.
