Phil Johnson is an associate in the Rains Lucia Stern St. Phalle & Silver, PC (“RLS”) Personal Injury and Workers’ Compensation Groups. Phil represents injured individuals and employees in state and federal courts, as well as in administrative hearings. Phil was born and raised in Rockford, Illinois. Prior to enrolling in law school, he spent five years working as a journalist. From sports writing in New York City, to community newspapers in Montana and the Midwest, journalism served as Phil’s travel ticket. His proudest journalistic achievement was uncovering millions of dollars in excessive taxation in a small county in Montana. An innocuous tip from a volunteer firefighter sparked a months-long investigation into state tax law. On the front page of the twice-weekly newspaper he edited, Phil battled government officials and competing publications before his findings were verified by state officials. His investigative work was recognized with state and national awards. Today, Phil applies the investigative skills he honed in the newsroom to his civil cases.
After a two-year stint writing for a legal newspaper, Phil took the plunge into law school. While studying at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law he was a member of Hastings’ competitive mock trial team. He holds an undergraduate and a master’s degree in News-Editorial Journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
