We are very excited to announce that we will be hosting our annual RLS Labor Symposium at Saint Mary's College on February 1, 2019. The theme is "Forewarned is Forearmed."
Over this last year, public employee labor unions and their members have faced ever-mounting legal and political challenges on various fronts. The United States Supreme Court's landmark decision in Janus v. AFSCME solidified the national effort to weaken public employee unions. In California, our own Supreme Court will soon decide several historic public employee pension cases. These cases represent a direct attack on California's long-standing legal rule that public employee pensions are vested rights which cannot be diminished without providing the employee with comparable new advantages. Finally, the political forces behind the attempt to weaken public unions and eliminate pension rights are lining up statewide ballot initiatives to further eviscerate pensions.
We will provide union leaders with insights as to how local public employers will use new-found economic, legal and political leverage to gain advantages in labor relations. Our speakers will address specific legal theories and bargaining strategies that union leaders will need to effectively advocate for their members.
Whether preparing for MOU negotiations, protecting a current contract or defending statutory rights, the presentations at RLS's upcoming Symposium will prepare union leaders for the anticipated fights over their members' rights and benefits.
